How much were you at the House of Love and Prayer?
Lived There
What year(s) were you at the House?

How did you meet Shlomo?
Shlomo gave a concert in my high school in Newark NJ. Pretty bizarre (or hashgacha protis, depending on one's point of view) since the school was a predominately black inner city school.
What is your Jewish and/or spiritual practice today?
Heavy Shlomo person, tempered by influence of close relationships with Rabbi Shloime Twerski and with the the Bobover Rebbe.
Deeply spiritual, halachik w/o being stupid.
Where do you live now?
Boca Raton, Florida--go figure!
Please tell us a little about your life today.
Currently an independent rabbi after having had pulpits in Rosedale, NY and Key West, Fl. I have a small kashruth certification agency, Chai Kosher (ChaiKosher.com) and still operate JewishKeyWest.com, a tourist and wedding info site. Have five grown children, three married. Have three grandchildren. Remarried four years ago to the former HLP resident, Judy Fabish. We reconnected after twenty five years via Frumster.com. We left Key West because her children needed a more conventional Jewish environment.
In Boca Raton, we are members of the Boca Raton Synagogue and are building a Shlomo community which is fully integrate within the general synagogue community. Our Shlomo minyan has about twenty regular families in attendance on Shabbos after its' first year of existence. This year I was invited by the shul's rabbis to give a 12 week class entitled Holy Brother--The Shlomo Carlebach Experience.
Am now beginning a Likkutei MaHaRan study group at the shul. It seems so strange to be accepted as normal after all these years of fighting the establishment.
Am presently working with a neighbor in creating a Jewish Spiritual Center in Boca Raton.

Yisroel, Thanks for reminding me of Reb Nachmans teaching. I learned a sefer, Hishtachfus Hanefesh a couple of times, though not recently, which centered on hisbodedus, but also gave a variety of good aitzos for avodas HaShem, including the need to ask HaShem for everything, no matter how small.

Yisroel my old friend, I am happy you wrote me, but unhappy that I didn't succeed in contacting you first. As soon as I read your interview when I saw the House site the first time months ago I wanted to write you. I said, no, I'm going soon to stay with Pesach in N. Miami for a week or two, and I'm going to pop in on Yisroel in Boca and surprise him. But that visit kept on getting pushed off, and still hasn't come about. Anyway my e-mail is efraimrosen@gmail.com, and my phone # is 443-904-5431. I may move to N. Miami in Sept. to take a job as a mashgiach with Pesach. I will certainly come to see you then and we will have a long enjoyable shmooze. I just told Pesach the other day about the time you taught me the right attitude about hitchhiking. We were standing on a corner in S.F., and you were hitching somewhere locallly, and you mentioned you always daven for a ride, and I said I wouldn't daven for such small things. You said we need HaShems help for everything, no matter how small. You were 100 % right, as I realized more and more. I have also heard a # of drashos from Rav Avigdor Miller on that inyan.

Reb Yisroel,

I'm so delighted that you've joined! Just last night, at a party with Tsvi Bar David (who is now in the process of getting his smicha) and his wife Ilana, we were reminising about the July 4th that you and Yehudis were with us. Do you remember? As we watched the fireworks, you and Tsvi and I shared our stories of true patriotism, about how we each managed to get out of the draft by being Jewish!

I've got some wonderful material from the interview with you that I recorded, that I hope to post here soon.

I'm looking forward to catching up!
