How much were you at the House of Love and Prayer?
Was a Regular
How did you meet Shlomo?
I was living up the block from the 2nd house for a few months and was soo excited to meet Shlomo for the 1st time. Shlomo's coming to town brought all the cherva from far and wide, the HLP was packed and the energy was sooo high, I could hear Shlomo from across the room; his Torah's were way above my head at that time but I felt connected to them nonetheless. Shlomo's way was to include everyone in the room, encourage the rest of us to share our Torah learnings, insights and more. The love and respect Shlomo showed us was powerful indeed. This was the 1st time I experienced a "holy" man treating us, as if we, were the ones connected to Hashem, truth and Torah. After the learning and of course SINGING was over, I hung back while everyone took their turn to speak with Shlomo. When my turn came I was envelped by and with him, time was moving around us but we were separate from time. Shlomo asked the simplest and conversely the deepest questions, knew not to push me and how to hold my spiritual quest close. That meeting was the beginning of my knowing how to find myself and my place. I have been blessed on many levels and one of the most precious was that we raised our children calling Shlomo "Uncle Shlomo" because Shlomo indeed became and remained a part of our lives/home.
What is your Jewish and/or spiritual practice today?
Today I am "Carlebacian" Modern Orthodox Liberal (if you can decipher that). I've lived in Boro Park, a great learning experience, lived on a Dairy Farm in PA dealing with proselytizing Menonites but I've always found my way to a shul and Shlomo. Today we are blessed to have Carlebacian style Shabbos Ma'ariv services in so many shuls and sing his wonderful niggunim, I close my eyes while singing the tefilahs and I can feel and hear Shlomo.
Where do you live now?
Flatbush - Brooklyn, New York
Please tell us a little about your life today.
My five children are now grown adults, 2 girls and 3 boys. The boys (all 3) were married in an 8 month period between Spring 2005 and Jan 2006 - Whew that was busy and exciting. I have 1 grandson:-) Too adorable for words. I work as an executive assistant to a literary agent in NYC. Those who remember me know I as married to "brother Ivan" Yisroel Finman and we have a great divorce. Our family remains close intact and happy. I've considered moving back west on so many occasions but somehow I still seem to be here on the east coast. One of the best things about NYC is getting to visit the Carlebach shul on 79th Street, remembering Shabbos or Yom Tov with Shlomo.
