- at the greenhouse at lombard and hyde on russian hill on a friday night, shabos parshas parah 5728, a few months before the house of love and prayer opened 40 years ago. a friend of mine told me that shlomo would be there for shabos and that other friends of mine would also be there. i arrive at the greenhouse about an hour after sunset that friday night after having worked on my job as a bicycle messenger until 6 and then stopping for a treife hamburger at a fast food place on market street. i got off the cable car at lombard and hyde and was welcomed with hugs and kisses by guitar playing hippies at the entrance to the greenhouse. inside the greenhouse everybody was singing and dancing the whole world is waiting to sing the song of shabos and then a few minutes later shlomo arrived and the singing and dancing became much more leibedig. shlomo proceded to sing many mores verses to this nigun, most of which he was making up spontaniously as he was singing this nigun to the point that he was even saying a drosha to this nigun when he sang "so why dont we sing the song of shabos? then the dancing got wild and lasted for hours until we were ready to hear shlomo daven kabolas shabos, singing the whole kabolas shabos to this nigun. after we finished maariv several hours later, we sang and danced to am yisroel chai for a long time and then at about one a.m. shlomo made kidush and i rushed to leave to catch the last cable car to go home for the night.
for the first time in my life i felt that i was breaking shabos because for the first time in my life i felt what i was breaking. for the first time in my life i had felt shabos.
how can we possibly tell a jew who doesnt keep shabos that he is sinning by breaking shabos when he doesnt even realize what shabos is? how can a jew possibly realize what shabos is if he has never felt shabos?
shlomo taught us that shabos is a psychedelic trip, the best psychedelic trip in the whole world, beter than marijuana and even better than lsd and that we dont need any of those unfortunately illegal drugs because we have a better drug than that. that drug is shabos, to SING the song of shabos!!!!!!!!!
before i met shlomo i was an 18 year old american reform jew who was not satisfied with reform judaism and was attending draft dodgers meetings where they were encouraging me to become a quaker and a pacifist conscientious objector.
shlomo saved me from becoming a quaker and giving up judaism. shlomo showed me that there is something special and something spiritual about judaismYIDISHKEIT. shlomo saved me from taking lsd by giving me a better trip than i could possibly ever get from lsd. thanks to shlomo i never became a quaker and i never took lsd. thanks to shlomo i never joined any non-jewish religions.
that shabos morning i took a steetcar and a cable car to get back to shlomo and i didnt like leaving before shabos was over, but i had allready made a commitment to be someplace else at 7:30pm.
the next time shlomo came to town the house of love and prayer was allready open and i went there friday afternoon with my sleeping bag to stay there the whole shabos because i allready knew that shabos is a psychedelic trip and that if you interrupt a psychedelic trip to do something mundane you end up with a bad trip.
i hereby give a message to all jews who drive home from shul friday night.you are doing something mundane in the middle of a psychedelic trip and that is why shabos is a bad trip for you and that is why you dont want to keep shabos.
a year later when i didnt want to eat treif any more and i wanted to spend all night learning torah with shlomo and didnt want to get up to go to college in the morning and started wearing tzitzis and tefilin my parents came to the house of love and prayer to make trouble for shlomo and not let shlomo daven or teach until he would send me home to my parent's house.
my mother tried to teach shlomo her theology that g-d didnt give the torah to moses on mount sinai and that the torah is only the philosophy of whoever wrote it. shlomo was swaying from side to side while my mother tried teaching her theology to shlomo. finally shlomo figured out what to tell my mother and told my mother "dont teach me theology. go home and cook your borsht.".
my mother would not let shlomo daven mincha or start that night's teach-in until shlomo would get me to leave with my parents to my parents house. finally when it was getting late for mincha shlomo made a deal with my parents that i would go with my parents to my parents house that thursday night and that shlomo would have me for shabos. at about 8:45 pm while i was taking off my brand new tefilin that i had bought that day, shlomo took me to his room upstairs to have yechidus with me. shlomo told me that if i would have joined another religion my parents would be very happy that i am returning to judaism even if my new judaism is orthodox instead of reform, but since i never joined another religion, my parents are very upset that i am becoming religious.shlomo told me about the deal he had made with my mother that i would go to the my parents house for the night and that they would let me go to the house of love and prayer for shabos. i preceeded to ask shlomo what yeshiva i should go to and shlomo preceeded to discuss with me the pros and cons of various different yeshivas.
i left with my parents while the torah was being taken out to have krias hatorah of shacharis before mincha as shlomo was preparing to daven a very late chasidishe mincha. at my parents house that night i ate food straight from the can with a plastic spoon.
friday morning i woke up and spent 6 hours davening shacharis wearing my new tefilin. my parents didnt want me to go to the house of love and prayer for shabos but i insisted on going and i went taking luggage with me. that shabos was the first shabos that i didnt carry anything, not even money in my pocket.
saturday night at 11:45pm my parents arrived to try to take me to their house while shlomo was in the middle of saying shalosh seudos torah on sefer chovos halevavos. shlomo was taking about how to love g-d is the most important mitzva of the torah when all of a sudden my parents walk in. shlomo immediately stops teaching chovas halevavos and starts to make havdala. after havdala i go to get my luggage and proceed to get in my parents car to go to their house for the night. as my father starts driving home my mother tells me that she will never let me go back to the house of love and prayer. i immediately become such an unruly child that my mother cant handle me and tells my father to drive me back to the house of love and prayer.
i lived at the house of love and prayer for the next 6 and a half weeks until i left for eretz yisroel. during this period of time i went several times to visit my mother's parents who lived at 349 7th ave which was only a few blocks from the house of love and prayer. i tried to get my grandfather to meet shlomo, but instead of telling my grandfather that shlomo was a real chasidic rebbe, i talked loshon hora about shlomo and because of the loshon hora that i talked about shlomo my grandfather didnt want to meet shlomo. my grandfather proceeded to give me musar about the inyan that shlomo was mekil about and i was mekabel my grandfather's musar.
it is very unfortunate that my grandfather never met shlomo as my grandfather by meeting shlomo would have been better able to connect to his past as a chasidic rabbinical student in cracow, bobov, and jelin, poland and a chasidic rabbi in proshevitz, poland. my grandfather, after having been rabbi of proshevitz, poland for a few months in 1922 realized that he would never make a living from being a rabbi in europe and accepted an offer to be the rabbi of a shul in chicago. as a rabbi in chicago, he realized that he would never make enough money from his salary for being a rabbi to pay for his wife and children to come to america, so he took a job as an auto body and fender repairman so he could have parnosa. when his employer told him that if he doesnt work on shabos he shouldnt even bother to come to work on monday he did what every member of his supposedly orthodox synagouge did and with much sadness, depression and crying worked on shabos. he felt so guilty about working on shabos that he was ashamed to show his face in any synagogue in chicago until he moved to california many years later. my grandfather was very similar to aryae coopersmith in that he felt that keeping shabos in america was an unsustainable lifestyle and that he would need to lead a secular life in order to make a living. after my grandfather brought his family to america he left chicago to go to california because his wife's (my grandmother's)persistance in remaining an orthodox jew made him feel very guilty that he wasnt doing what his neshama wanted him to do. my grandfather got a phd degree in eye relaxation therapy, wrote a book on how to relax, and was an eye relaxation therapist for many years teaching people how to relax their eyes and see without glasses, first in the basement of his house and then in the front bedroom of his house. as he got older and more forgetfull he retired from being an eye relaxation therapist and he started writing his autobiography which i would like to read except that nobody bothered to save it when my grandparent's house was cleaned and sold. he also started putting on his tefilin and davening and recording his davening and listening to the recordings of his davening while sleeping. but he never let anybody know how much of a baal teshuva he was and didnt want people to think he had re-embraced the orthodox judaism of his youth. when i tried to get my grandfather to meet shlomo, i had no idea how orthodox my grandfather was and i told my grandfather about shlomo being makil on a certain inyan, thinking that that would get my grandfather to want to meet shlomo. at that time my grandfather revealed to me something that he was scared and ashamed to reveal to anyone else, that he was a strictly orthodox jew and had been rabbi of proshevitz before he came to america. because i talked loshon hara on shlomo, my grandfather didnt want to meet shlomo. it would have been very good for my grandfather to meet shlomo. my grandfather needed chizuk from shlomo to help him reveal to the world that he was really a real chasidic rabbi, something that he revealed only to me. because i said loshon hara about shlomo to my grandfather, my grandfather lost the opportunity to have a rebbe in his old age and the world never found out about my grandfather.
this teaches us that we have to be extremely carefull to avoid talking or even listening to loshon hara.
- What is your Jewish and/or spiritual practice today?
- very hasidic. i go to many hasidic rebbes who might or might not want their names mentioned on amalek's internet. some of the rebbes that i go to are very much against amalek's internet and are so holy and so innoscent that they know so little about the internet that they dont even know that the internet is amalek's tool for corrupting the jews. i showed a picture of my mother's father to one of these holy tzadikim and he told me that my grandfather was the prushevitzer rebbe and that i should try to follow in his footsteps and be proshevitzer rebbe.

- i am married to a very hasidic sefardic israeli woman who is descended from the ben-ish-hai.
i am not happy that i had to become the av bais din of golden gate and sit in judgement of a fellow jew and excomunicate him, but he turned me into the government for giving tzedaka, accusing me of being grossly incapable of managing my money and incapable of resisting fraud or undue influence. he threatened to sue the bais din of igud harabonim if they would send him another hasmana or write a letter of excommunication against him, so one of the rabbis on the bais din told me to write the letter of excommunication against him.
now i am stuck having to live off the income from my inheritance and even though i am guaranteed to die a multimillionaire i have no money to pay off my over $80,000.00 in credit card debt.
i am looking for somebody to lend me about $80,000.00 with a heter iska, rabbinical special permission to charge interest when loaning money to another jew
whoever loans me money is guaranteed to get paid back when i die because i am guaranteed to die a multi-millionaire. i am literally worth more dead than alive. maybe somebody knows somebody who doesn't want to invest all of his money in the stock market or in real estate but would like to recieve more interest than from putting one's money in the bank, so that he knows that something will be left for his children. i want to pay less interest than i am paying on my credit cards.
unfortunately i am doomed to die a multi-millionaire and will never be able to have the same gan-eden that shlomo has for having died penniless.

a history of israeli medical malpractice
when i was in the israeli army almost 40 years ago they put me in a mental hospital and violently knocked me down on a bed and gave me tranquilizer shots in my behind that caused me to become paralized. i am still suffering from the side effects of these tranquilizers which i still dont know the name of. a scientologist told me many years ago that the only way i will ever get these tranquilizers out of my system is if i spend millions of hours in saunas sweating away the poisons that are stored… Continue

- i want to thank aryae for giving me the oportunity to have a webpage where i can put my chidushei torah on the internet.
the baal-shem-tov asked the angel who taught him torah when will moshiach come? the angel replied "eimosai k'awsimar lichsheyafutzu maanosecha chutza, when the deepest secrets of torah and kabala are spread to the lowest places on earth".

- i want to thank aryae for putting links to chabad and breslev websites on my page. i feel that aryae's choosing a secular lifestyle and my grandfather's choosing a secular lifestyle had great similarities. my grandfather thought that not working on saturday in the america of 1923 was an unsustainable lifestyle and aryae felt that the lifestyle of the house of love and prayer was an unsustainable lifestyle. my grandfather became an auto body and fender repairman and aryae became a carpenper. my grandfather went on to get a phd degree in eye relaxation therapy and become an eye relaxation therapist. aryae went on to get a master's degree in psychology and become a career counciler and later become a human recources counciler, consultant, and manager.
aryae, you are now 64 and a half years old and it is time for you to retire from or at least semi-retire from your secular life and devote the rest of your life to doing what shlomo wanted you to do, to spread the song of shabos and the light of shabos to the whole world.

First, regarding your remark about me and Shabbos. I want you to know that, ever since my days with Shlomo and the House starting 40 years ago, I do not work on Shabbos. As you know, I am not Orthodox and do not observe all the halachos, but love of Shabbos is still central in my life.
Second, about "Amalak's Internet." I understand your point: there is a lot of negative stuff, and evil stuff on the Internet. Sadly the Internet does not seem any different in this regard than the rest of the world. However the holy communities of Breslov, Chabad, and literally hundreds of others are also present, offering an amazing wealth of Torah, and Jewish resources. My statement is, the Internet is like the rest of the world. There is both the holy, and the not so holy, and it is up to us to make good choices, and with God's help find the hidden sparks and lift them up where we can.

- we should be celebrating the 40th aniversery, yes the 40th birthday of the house of love and prayer, hashem help us to become stronger and stronger in yiddishkeit every day!!!!!!!!!!! this shabos parshas bamidbar was the 40th aniversery of shlomo's first shabos at the house of love and prayer and the 40th aniversery of my first shabos at the house and the 40th aniversery of the first time i kept shabos.

- nobody should compromise halacha to see the musical about shlomo. men should not go see the musical because women are singing in it. therefore we need a woman who was at the house to go to manhattan to see the musical and write a review about it and let the people who arerunning this musical know how inaccurate the musical is about the life of shlomo and what went on at the house of love and prayer. the manhattan carlebach shul emphattically disclaims any involvement with this musical. this musical portrays shlomo as a rebel against the torah way of life instead of a great rabbi who bent over backwards to mekarev people to the torah way of life.

- i stumbled accross this website during my search to find the producer or director of the new broadway musical about shlomo and the house house of love and prayer, neither of whom have any websites or links on how to reach them. how impersonal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i wonder if anybody who was ever at the house of love and prayer has seen the mustcal about shlomo and the house of love and prayer. it would be a good idea if somebody who was at the house would go to manhattan to see the musical and write a review about the musical and put it on this website and maybe even on other more read websites. this play is written by and performed by people of the younger generation who only know what they heard from stories that we older ex-hippies told them, but they know notthing first hand.

My take on the Internet is, it's like the phone. It's impersonal as you say, just a way to communicate for good or bad. It depends on what we choose to say to each other -- it's all up to us!
I agree with you that we can't mekarev anyone on the Internet. There's a lot of garbage here, but also many, many amazing sources of Torah learning. And once we're already met a holy brother or sister who has brought us close, why not use the tools, which HaShem has caused to show up in our world, to communicate with other for good?

- i see that the house of love and prayer has gone to the extremely impersonal internet where there is no love and there is no prayer. shlomo never used a computer and certainly never used amalek's internet his whole life. his derech was to personally show everybody his love for them. if he would have tried to mekarev us on amalek's impersonal internet, none of us would have become religious!
